Chiefs headlines for Tuesday, January 29.
The latest
“It has been a decade since our last major renovation to Arrowhead Stadium was completed and we’ve been taking an extensive look at areas we can address as we move towards future seasons,” said Chiefs President Mark Donovan. “We are excited about these projects and look forward to the work beginning in the coming days and weeks.”
Bold Free-Agent Predictions for Every NFL Team | Bleacher Report
Kansas City Chiefs Let Dee Ford Walk, Sign Ronald Darby
The Chiefs defense desperately needs more balance and could use a top-notch outside cornerback to work next to slot specialist Kendall Fuller. Impending free-agent Ronald Darby fits that mold, has plenty of experience at age 25, might be the best corner on the market and would be a heck of a lot cheaper than Ford.
ESPN projects Chiefs Vegas win total for 2019 | 247 Sports
Barnwell made the projection in a feature published Monday that takes an early guess at what Vegas oddsmakers will choose for each team’s win total and over/under heading into the 2019 season. The Chiefs were one of three teams projected at 11 wins along with the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams, with only the New England Patriots projected to have more wins (12).
Tom Brady explains why beating Chiefs was among “great joys” of his life | Yahoo! Sports
“I love playing football and I love the competition and love competing at the highest level,” Brady said Monday on WEEI’s “Mut & Callahan.” ”I don’t know what’s more fun for me than running out against Kansas City in the biggest game of our season in front of 70,000 people and coming away with the win. That was one of the great joys of my life.
Former Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters holds court at Super Bowl’s media circus | Kansas City Star
“A change of scenery is always good sometimes,” Peters said. “I guess it just wasn’t working in KC. It was just time to move on.” For Peters, the move to the Rams was beneficial for multiple reasons. Not only did he get a fresh start, the Oakland native also got a chance to move back to a familiar part of the country. “I got a chance to be closer to home and take full advantage of your opportunities,” he said.
Done with football at 27, ex-Chiefs linebacker has no regrets | Fox 4 KC
Though his paychecks are not as gaudy these days, Johnson feels as if he can breathe again. “Now, I know if I do my job to the best of my ability, I can keep coming to work,” he said. “Someone’s not to call me up into the office and say, ‘We looked at the tape, and we’re thinking about bringing in a younger, better player today.’”
Around the league
The Patriots are quietly paying for Gordon’s drug rehab at an inpatient facility in Gainesville, Fla. and working with the NFL and NFLA Players Association to help the troubled receiver treat his addiction, according to NESN’s Doug Kyed. Not only are they helping Gordon, but they also believe a return to the team is still possible.
Robey-Coleman on Tom Brady: Age has ‘taken a toll’ | NFL
“Yes. Yes. Age has definitely taken a toll. For him to still be doing it, that’s a great compliment for him. But I think that he’s definitely not the same quarterback he was,” Robey-Coleman said.
“Alex Smith is trying to recover from a gruesome leg fracture and it isn’t a guarantee he’ll be available at the start of the season. Nick Foles, Joe Flacco and other free agent passers might be too expensive to fit under their salary cap. That leaves them with the draft as their only realistic option to upgrade the position, which could cause them to look at Murray, the dynamic but undersized dual-threat Heisman winner.”
Lawsuit reveals NFL’s response to blown Saints-Rams call | New York Post
“Because the officials on the field are humans, like the players and coaches, errors will happen,” attorneys for the league wrote in a brief. “The NFL parties do not dispute that they have previously advised the Saints, including the club’s head coach, that one or more penalties for pass interference or illegal helmet-to-helmet contact were mistakenly not called late in the NFC Championship Game, and that the NFL would like its officials on the field to make these calls.”
NFL still marching toward Goodell’s $25 billion revenue goal | NBC Sports
In 2010, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell laid out an ambitious goal: He wanted the league’s total revenue to reach $25 billion by 2027. The league seems to be on pace to reach that goal.
AP Exclusive: NFL centers seeing shorter career longevity | Associated Press
But an Associated Press analysis revealed that despite their unique skill set, it was centers — not running backs, linebackers or defensive backs — who were becoming more endangered more quickly than players at any other position . In 2009, the average center had six years in the league. This season, the average center had four years of experience.

More fans in Kansas City watched Pro Bowl than any other city
Kansas City drew a 13.9 rating for the Pro Bowl, followed by Pittsburgh (8.6), Norfolk (8.2), West Palm Beach (8.1) and Cleveland (8.1). The total audience for the game peaked from 4-4:30 p.m. Arrowhead time with 8,931,000 viewers, according to ESPN.
Patrick Mahomes named MVP by DraftKings’ fantasy football awards
A day after being named Pro Bowl MVP, two weeks after being named PFWA’s MVP and a month after being named the other AP’s quarterback of the year, Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes has earned yet another honor. This one comes from the world of fantasy football—Mahomes has won this year’s DraftKings Fantasy Football Award for Most Valuable Player.
Anthony Sherman should have won the Pro Bowl’s offensive MVP award
Sherman compiled four rushes for 11 yards and a rushing touchdown in the showcase game, as well as three catches for 92 yards. Mahomes was 7 of 14 for 156 yards and a touchdown.
In all seriousness, the problem Sherman ran into was that 84 yards of his production came in the game’s fourth quarter. I didn’t cover this year’s Pro Bowl in Orlando, so I can’t be 100 percent certain on this, but media members are typically handed MVP ballots early on in the game’s final quarter, and I’d guess many finalized their ballots prior to Sherman finishing the game as strong as he did.
