Baltimore Ravens hire former Chiefs assistant head coach

David Culley, who worked under Andy Reid for 18 seasons, is headed to Baltimore.

Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant head coach David Culley is headed to the Baltimore Ravens as their new assistant head coach and receivers and passing coordinator, the team announced via its official Twitter account on Tuesday.

“We are very pleased to add David Culley to our staff,” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. “He is highly respected throughout the league as a teacher, game-planner and motivator.

”As [offensive coordinator] Greg [Roman] and I moved forward with a review and preview of our offense, we both wanted to add the very best coach in this area possible. With David joining us, we have done that. His overall NFL and coaching experience and abilities will help us immensely.”

Culley, 63, worked under current Chiefs head coach Andy Reid from 1999-2016, first with the Philadelphia Eagles and then with the Kansas City Chiefs when Reid came to the team in 2013.

Culley served as the Chiefs’ assistant head coach and wide receivers coach from 2013-16, a span that included former Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin’s 1,088-receiving yard season, his first season of more than 1,000 yards since 2011. Greg Lewis replaced Culley as Chiefs receivers coach upon his departure in 2016.

Culley spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Buffalo Bills before officially joining the Ravens’ staff on Tuesday.

The move to Buffalo and now Baltimore keeps Culley within the Andy Reid coaching tree. Current Bills head coach Sean McDermott spend 1999-2010 under Reid while current Ravens head coach John Harbaugh worked under Reid from 1999-2007.
