Bengals coaching profile: Brian Callahan

The Bengals have a new offensive coordinator. How will Brian Callahan be integrated into Zac Taylor’s staff?

The Cincinnati Bengals will enter the month of February without the vacancies of their coaching staff officially filled, but we got confirmation of who will become their next offensive coordinator will be.

Brian Callahan will replace Bill Lazor as the Bengals’ offensive coordinator, and with Zac Taylor coming in as head coach, the Bengals will have three coaches on staff with experience as a quarterbacks coach. Callahan is younger than Taylor at 34 years old, and their NFL resumes are strikingly similar as well.

Resume

  • 2010: Denver Broncos (Coaching Assistant)
  • 2011-2012: Denver Broncos (Offensive Quality Control)
  • 2013-2014: Denver Broncos (Offensive Assistant)
  • 2015: Denver Broncos (QB Coach/Offensive Assistant)
  • 2016-2017: Detroit Lions (QB Coach)
  • 2018-present: Oakland Raiders (QB Coach)

After his two years with the Broncos, Callahan began working with quarterback Peyton Manning and their prolific offense under Adam Gase. When Manning retired, he took the quarterbacks coach job with the Lions for two years and then became Jon Gruden’s first quarterbacks coach in Oakland.

From working under Gase and the Broncos’ offense, Callahan is obviously familiar with operating a zone-based scheme that his father Bill is so well known for. Without actual play-calling experience in his career, Callahan is a major unknown. We know he has experience in working with the pass game in multiple offenses, but designing and structuring an offense all together is a different animal. There’s pieces to what his offense may look like, but not enough to articulate a picture.

Bill Callahan is expected to join his son on the staff as the offensive line coach, and it’s possible that he and Brian become the running and passing game coordinator, while Taylor is the play-caller. The older Callahan’s hiring is not official, but thanks to Gruden, Brian’s hiring is. It’s safe to say both will be on the Bengals’ staff for this season now.
