A look at the likely trade partners and possibilities for the Denver Broncos as they search for their next franchise quarterback.
Broncos Country is in full on QB frenzy and I totally get it. Case Keenum inspires so little confidence there are some who would prefer Blake Bortles or Joe FlaCco. Meanwhile the rest of the team looks poised to seriously contend for the playoffs in 2019. That’s why articles like Jeffrey Essary’s make a ton of sense, especially if you believe there’s a QB that will grow into a top 10 talent in the 2019 crop.
Denver Broncos can’t afford to play it safe at quarterback anymore - Mile High Report
One of the Broncos strengths has been getting value out of it’s player acquisitions and not overpaying for anything, but that approach has yielded table scraps at the quarterback position.
The problem is finding a willing trade partner. The same issue likely cost Elway his shot at Sam Darnold last year when the New York Giants refused to move behind the Cleveland Browns and lose their shot at Saquon Barkley. Chances are, if the Broncos are going QB hunting they’ll need to move way up, especially in light of Drew Lock’s Senior Bowl week that has set the NFL abuzz.
In the last week I’ve seen plenty of talk about the cost it would take to move up to 2, but that seems misguided. Unless it becomes a certainty that the Arizona Cardinals are taking Nick Bosa, John Lynch and the 49ers are likely to sit idle at 2 for a chance at their franchise edge rusher. Unless the Broncos front office works out an “if/then” deal for once Bosa goes (and that’s assuming Kyle Shanahan doesn’t have his eyes on Quinnen Williams or someone else at 2) Denver is unlikely to move up that far.
With that ruled out, the Broncos best chances to get ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars appears to be the New York Jets at 3 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 5. Oakland’s probably not helping Denver grab their franchise guy, especially after Gruden spent a week evaluating him.
New York just grabbed their guy last year after the same kind of aggressive move that Denver needs to pull. The Jets traded 3 second round picks as well as their 2018 first rounder to move up from 6 to 3. That means they’ll probably demand more to slide from 3 back to 10, but with Darnold in place may be open to doing so.
Tampa is the other realistic possibility. Jameis Winston has at least one more season to prove he’s “the guy” and the Bucs need a ton of defensive help. Multiple picks would let Arians and company throw more darts at the board to see what hits. Additionally the cost of moving from 10 to 5 isn’t nearly as high.
It will be expensive, but the Broncos need to ensure they get high enough in the draft order that another team can’t surpass them at the last moment. The Giants, Jaguars and Washington loom as QB needy teams likely to pounce on a rookie. That cost is the same reason some are cooling on the possibility.
I don’t think Elway trades up. When I wrote they should and wanted to draft The Lock Ness Monster Quarterback, his draft stock wasn’t so high.

Their ceiling is probably limited by the difficulty of playing in the AFC West and the inconsistent play of Case Keenum, but if new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello can protect Keenum, the Broncos have more upside than you might see at first glance.

Most Likely Senior Bowl Prospects To Go Round 1 - The Draft Network
Drew Lock, QB, Missouri But what about the inconsistent accuracy? The sloppy mechanics under pressure? The slow processing at times? I get it, Lock comes with a whole bundle of concerns, but the NFL is going to love his intangibles, the improvements he made late in his senior season and of course his impressive arm. Like it or not, Lock probably has the best chance to go Round 1 of any prospect that was in Mobile.

10. Denver Broncos Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma. New coach Vic Fangio said Case Keenum is his quarterback “right now.” And even if the plan is to stick with Keenum in 2019, his contract is up after the season. And if there’s one thing the Broncos desperately need it’s a new face of the franchise. Murray could be that and then some. There will always be questions about his size but given the way the game has changed over the last five years, it’s reasonable to think he can flourish in the league.

Bill Belichick’s praise of Wade Phillips is seen by some as something other than that – ProFootballTalk
“I’ve certainly changed a lot in the last 30 years, schematically,” Belichick told reporters. “Wade really . . . hasn’t. He really hasn’t. You’ve got to give him credit for that. The system has lasted. I mean, really, this is part of his dad’s system that he’s developed and adapted and developed there. I mean, I have a ton of respect for what he’s done and how he’s done it over every different kind of offense you can see. Multiple tight ends, run-and-shoot, 10 personnel, 11 personnel, 12 personnel, 21, 22. He’s been able to do the same thing — not the same thing, but his system has been able to handle all that. And I think that’s a real credit to what he put together 30 years ago.”
