The current Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach fits the mold of what John Elway and Vic Fangio are looking for.
Good morning, Broncos Country!
You probably know the name Zac Taylor.
You should also know his brother, Press.
Zac was one of the five candidates to interview to become the Denver Broncos head coach. Some, me included, thought he could be an option for the Broncos as an offensive coordinator. But multiple reports indicate Zac will become the next head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals (as soon as the Los Angeles Rams season ends, where he serves as the quarterbacks coach).
With the news Gary Kubiak will not serve as the Broncos offensive coordinator in 2019, speculation has started on who Elway and new head coach Vic Fangio may hire. We had a good rundown on some of the potential candidates on Saturday. One name that wasn’t on the list, and one I think should be, is Press Taylor.
As I told Adam Malnati on the latest MHR Radio Podcast, the current Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach fits the mold of what Elway and Fangio say they’re looking for. I think Taylor needs to get a serious look as Denver’s offensive coordinator. It doesn’t hurt that he works for Doug Pederson, but there’s a consensus that Taylor is a rising star in the NFL. He is just 31 years old (Jan. 13 is his birthday), but that shouldn’t be a deterrent, not if the Broncos want to modernize their offense. Don’t take my word for it ...
From a great story in Sports Illustrated about the Taylor brothers:
Under Pederson, Press’s reputation quickly blossomed. Prior to Super Bowl LIII, Eagles offensive coordinator (and now Indianapolis Colts head coach) Frank Reich told reporters “Press is a rising star.” After the Super Bowl, Press drew national attention for being the one who suggested they install the trick play ‘Philly Special,’ which he’d seen in a meaningless 2016 Chicago Bears-Minnesota Vikings regular-season finale and had added to his vault of trick plays. (Eagles coaches refer to it as “Press’s vault.”) He is admired for his meticulous organization and attention to detail. And as a teacher, Press has a unique gift for articulating the finest details of any concept and seamlessly fitting them into the big-picture perspective.
