As the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots gear up for Super Bowl LIII this Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars are in full offseason mode. Let’s recap some of the news and notes over the past week or so.
We’re talking about the Pro Bowl, Senior Bowl, Austin Seferian-Jenkins’ future in Duval, forgetting about the disappointing 2018 season, mock drafts and more. And away we go...
News & Notes
- The Jacksonville Jaguars had two representatives at the Pro Bowl in Orlando this past Sunday: Cornerback Jalen Ramsey and defensive end Calais Campbell. Ramsey was voted in, while Campbell went in as an alternate for J.J. Watt. This was Campbell’s fourth career Pro Bowl and Ramsey’s second. Both players made back-to-back appearances in 2018-2019. Check out a gallery of the experience on Jaguars.com.
- More on the Pro Bowl: Ramsey had a lot of fun, recording two tackles, one pass defended and even playing offense and catching a touchdown from Deshaun Watson. Campbell recorded a sack and a solo tackle and tested out his sideline reporting skills.
- The Senior Bowl also took place this week with plenty of news coming out of Mobile, Alabama. Zach Goodall — former Big Cat Country writer and current LockOnJaguars.com writer/podcast host — had excellent coverage on this throughout all of last week. Check out his scouting notebook chock-full of information about potential fits for the Jaguars, quotes and meetings.
- Our own Jon Kurland listed some potential names at the Senior Bowl the Jaguars may be interested in, while Filip Prus gave his best options from the game for the Jags.
- Is tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins’ time already up in Jacksonville? ASJ himself seems to think so, but the Jaguars say they have not made a decision on his 2019 option.
- The 2018 season was an abysmal one for the Jaguars. Jalen Ramsey is putting it behind him and focusing on the future, per ESPN’s Michael DiRocco.
- Would the Jaguars trade Leonard Fournette straight up for Nick Foles? Would the Philadelphia Eagles even consider this? Will Brinson of CBS Sports thinks it a possibility, and we discuss it here.
- Alfie Crow has been taking a look at Jacksonville’s roster outlook for 2019. So far, he’s covered quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends.
- Comparing Blake Bortles to Cody Kessler through advanced metrics — it’s not pretty either way.
- The Jaguars are discussing a potential contract restructuring with Calais Campbell.
- How did rookie safety Ronnie Harrison do in his rookie season? Brian Jackson of WJXT News4Jax reviewed his season. He also reviewed rookie defensive lineman Taven Bryan’s season.
- Jacksonville.com’s John Reid had a couple of intriguing articles this past week. Jalen Ramsey has no plans to assume a bigger vocal leadership role on the team in 2019, but will lead by example. Also, former players speak highly of new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo.
- What if the Jaguars pass on a quarterback in round one of the NFL Draft? The Athletic’s Daniel Popper looks at three options (subscription required).
- Former Jaguars defensive end (and current Los Angeles Ram) Dante Fowler had a few choice words to describe his time in Jacksonville.
Mock Drafts
Disclaimer: I put little to no stock in mock drafts pre-combine and especially before the Super Bowl is even played, but I understand the interest. Here are a few recent ones:
- Lance Zierlein of NFL.com: (Jan. 29) Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
- Dan Kadar of SBNation (Jan. 28): Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
- Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports (Jan. 28): Drew Lock, QB, Missouri
- Elizabeth Finny of Bleacher Report (Jan. 28): Clelin Ferrell, DE, Clemson
- Bucky Brooks of NFL.com (Jan. 25): Drew Lock, QB, Missouri
- Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com (Jan. 23) Jeffery Simmons, DT, Mississippi State
(Two defensive linemen here. Can we please stop with this while the offense is in shambles?)
