Monday Cheese Curds: Packers have work to do on Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff

With no external hires aboard yet, the new head coach has plenty of positions to fill.

Todd Monken is out. Several of Matt LaFleur’s other targets for his offensive coordinator with the Green Bay Packers are now off-limits. So what now?

We’re closing in on a week since LaFleur was brought aboard as the Packers’ next head coach, and in that time he has yet to hire an assistant coach from outside Green Bay. Retaining Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator was one of the first decisions, but with Monken unavailable and no word yet on Nathaniel Hackett, he’ll have his work cut out for him in the coming days and weeks.

In the meantime, more Packers assistants could be on their way out. James Campen is gone, headed for Cleveland with Monken. Joe Whitt got the axe on Friday. Now, another key defensive assistant is rumored to be a target of another team, though his hiring timeline will likely depend on the result of the AFC Championship on Sunday afternoon.

As a result, expect plenty more rumors and news to bounce around this week as LaFleur continues to work on assembling his staff. With draft prep season getting underway — the Shrine Game takes place on Saturday with the Senior Bowl the following week — there’s no time to waste.

Matt LaFleur always pushing to ‘stay one step ahead’ | Packers.com
For a team whose players cited complacency and a lack of accountability as issues that needed to be fixed by the next head coach, LaFleur certainly seems to be a good fix. He does multiple things out of the same formations to avoid being predictable, and he's always looking to adapt his approach to the players who are on his roster and who are available on Sundays.

Packers could lose defensive assistant Patrick Graham to Dolphins | Packers Wire
Graham came to Green Bay from New England a year ago and served as the team's defensive run game coordinator. With Brian Flores likely to get the head coaching job in Miami, signs point to Graham rejoining his old colleague, potentially as defensive coordinator.

Jets WR coach Karl Dorrell emerges as possible addition to LaFleur staff | Packers News
Dorrell is viewed as a likely candidate for the same WR job as he occupied in New York, rather than offensive coordinator. Still, he has a Shanahan connection, working for Mike in Denver, hiring Kyle at UCLA, and working for Gary Kubiak in Houston.

Packers interested in Dolphins special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi | Packers Wire
Meanwhile, the Packers are trying to interview a Dolphins coach as a potential replacement for Ron Zook. Rizzi interviewed for Miami's head coaching job but apparently won't get it.

Yes, the Packers' defense struggled in 2018; however, this trend can help explain why the team still went with an offensive-minded coach to get Rodgers and company back to elite status.

Taysom Hill’s fake punt vs. Eagles helped send Saints to NFC Championship - SBNation.com
We won't even discuss the Hill factor here. Let's just be impressed by the fact that the Saints ran a fake up the gut against an Eagles unit that was ready for the fake and had several defensive starters on the field -- and New Orleans still got it.

Bizarre Ear Condition Makes Woman Unable to Hear Men's Voices | Newsweek
I suspect that plenty of women would be perfectly happy if they woke up with this condition, which made this person unable to hear low frequencies.
