It looks like there’s a good chance Hackett could be Matt LaFleur’s first coordinator hire.
On Monday, the Green Bay Packers picked Matt LaFleur as the 15th head coach in franchise history. On Friday, LaFleur is beginning interviews of his own to assemble a staff of assistant coaches.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Nathaniel Hackett is interviewing Friday for a “top offensive” coaching job on LaFleur’s staff. In all likelihood, Hackett is under consideration for the offensive coordinator position, the job he most recently held with the Jacksonville Jaguars through late November of 2018. He was elevated to that position midway through the 2016 season and was responsible for calling plays.
Hackett’s tenure as OC and playcaller in Jacksonville included the team’s surprising 2017 season, which saw them make a deep run in the postseason. The Jaguars finished that year ranked fifth in the NFL in points scored and sixth in yards, thanks in large part to the league’s top-ranked rushing attack and a productive (if unspectacular) season from quarterback Blake Bortles.
Interestingly, Hackett’s firing late in the 2018 season marked the first time he and Jaguars coach Doug Marrone parted ways since Marrone hired him as Syracuse University’s quarterbacks & tight ends coach in 2010. Since then, the two have stuck together, with Hackett serving as Marrone’s offensive coordinator with the Orange (2011 and 2012) and the Buffalo Bills (2013 and 2014) before the two moved to Jacksonville for the 2015 season.
APC’s Jason Hirschhorn discussed Hackett’s potential fit Friday morning. He would be a bit of an outsider who could bring a different perspective to the offense from LaFleur, whose offensive background is in the Mike/Kyle Shanahan system. A potential Hackett hire could inject some additional creativity into the running game in particular.
Stay tuned for more news on the assembly of the coaching staff as it is announced.
