Report: Eagles making offensive line change prior to Bears game

Isaac back.

The Philadelphia Eagles plan to start Isaac Seumalo at left guard for their Wild Card game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, according to a report from NJ.com’s Zack Roseblatt.

Seumalo was also seen taking first team left guard reps during the early portion of Philadelphia Thursday practice at the NovaCare Complex.

This is noteworthy because Stefen Wisniewski has been filling in at left guard ever since Seumalo suffered a chest injury during the Eagles’ Week 14 game against the Cowboys.

There’s been some question as to whether Seumalo would return to the starting lineup or if the Eagles would just keep Wis in there. After all, the Eagles are 3-0 in their last three games and the offensive line is playing well. But when asked about the left guard situation on Wednesday, Doug Pederson did not reveal the team’s plans for the position.

Seumalo originally replaced Wisniewski in the starting lineup leading up the Eagles’ Week 5 game against the Minnesota Vikings. At the time, Wisniewski said he felt like his benching wasn’t performance related. In any case, Seumalo remained the starter until getting hurt.

For what it’s worth, Pro Football Focus grades Seumalo as the superior player. The Eagles’ 2016 third-round pick ranks 35th out of 79 guards this season while Wisniewski is 58th. Their grading system sees the two players as similarly capable pass protectors but ranks Seumalo as a significantly better run blocker.

The Eagles will need another strong performance from their offensive line as they face a very tough Bears defense on Sunday.
