Roster outlook: Tight end

Now that the Super Bowl has been decided, it means the offseason talk is going to ramp up quickly for teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars. They’ve filled out their coaching staff, which included the hiring of offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. We can now start looking at the roster and trying to figure out what the team is going to have in 2019 and what they could be adding and what positions they’ll want to be adding to.

You can read about the Jaguars salary cap situation right here for now, until the official numbers are released, that’s the best we’ll get.

Next up, we will look at the tight end position.

Players under contract in 2019:

Austin Seferian-Jenkins: For now, ASJ is under contract. In case you missed it there was some confusion over what exactly happened, but for now he’s under contract. ASJ didn’t do much after signing for a mid-level free agent deal over the offseason, banged up in a lot of games and then missing most of the season with an abdomin injury.

Ben Koyack: A former late round draft pick and re-signed midseason after the injury bug also hit the tight end position. I think Koyack is probably going to be back for at least training camp, but once again I think he will have a hard time making the final roster.

Pharoah McKever: He is a real person who is under contract!

Potential cap cuts:

Austin Seferian-Jenkins: I mean, it’s basically already decided it seems. Releasing ASJ prior to Feb. 20th saves the team almost $4.5 million in cap room.

Potential free agent options:

Jared Cook: While he’s 31 years old, Cook has still been a solid productive tight end. I’m not sure what his market value is going to be, but something like 3-years, $20 million seems about right.

Luke Willson: The Jaguars were interested last year, but went with ASJ. I could see them re-visit Willson again.

C.J. Uzomah: A player who emerged for the Bengals this year, only 26 years old.

Jesse James: A solid all-around tight end who has done a nice job for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

James O’Shaughnessy: I could see the Jaguars bringing him back.

Tyler Eifert: Has dealt with a lot of injuries and might be worth taking a cheap gamble.
