That’s the definition of a Hall of Famer. Get the Smilin’ Assassin to Canton.
As you’ve gathered over the last few days, we’re making our push for Steve Atwater to get to Canton, Ohio.
It worked two years ago for Terrell Davis, so the MHR staff is taking another crack at it with our 27-in-27. Atwater needs to get in the Pro Football Hall Fame ... this year. In fact, the Denver Broncos legend should have his bust there already. The fact we need to do this for the greatest players the NFL has seen is absurd. Alas, that is a different topic for a different day and one Broncos Country knows all too well.
On this Orange Friday (Jan. 11, 2019), the next reason on our list the Smilin’ Assassin needs to get to Canton — he was elite. This is the “no shit” reason on our list, but few were better in the history of the league at the safety position. When Atwater played, no one was better. He revolutionized the position.
When the games mattered most, Atwater was at his best. The hit on Christian Okoye (that Laurie Lattimore-Volkmann led this series off with) and his performance in Super Bowl XXXII are a few of the highlights. As Andrew Mason told Adam Malnati and me on the MHR Radio Podcast, if they awarded a defensive MVP for that magical game in San Diego, it would have gone to Atwater.
That’s the definition of a Hall of Famer.
Get the Smilin’ Assassin to Canton.
