Steve Spagnuolo will be Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator — report

Steve Spagnuolo

Spags worked for Andy Reid in Philadelphia

Former New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will reportedly become defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Spagnuolo, of course, did two stints as defensive coordinator with the Giants. The first was 2007-2008 after coming from the Philadelphia Eagles, where he worked for Reid. The second was from 2015-2017, a tenure during which he spent the final four games as interim head coach replacing the fired Ben McAdoo.

Spagnuolo was out of the NFL in 2018 after being let go by the Giants.

Spagnuolo’s resume includes a mixed bag of success as a defensive coordinator with the Giants and New Orleans Saints, and a failed three-year stint as head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

As a coordinator, though, he has had success when he has had talent to work with.

The Chiefs fired defensive coordinator Bob Sutton after a 37-31 Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots. Kansas City finished 24th in the league in points allowed and 31st in yardage allowed in 2018.

Interestingly, Spagnuolo is a base 4-3 coach. Sutton ran a base 3-4.
