The team has decided to ‘go in a different direction’ with the linebacker position, ending the veteran’s 14-year tenure with the Panthers.
The Carolina Panthers have decided to part ways with 14-year veteran linebacker Thomas Davis, ending his tenure with the only team he has ever played for since being drafted in 2005.
Davis announced the news tonight on his Twitter account.

Here’s a portion of Davis’ message, transcribed by Max Henson:
“I just want to thank the Carolina Panthers,” Davis said. “I want to thank my teammates - you guys have been amazing. Fourteen very special years that I will always remember, that I will always cherish. To Panther nation, I cannot thank you guys enough for the love and support.”
The Panthers selected Davis with the No. 14 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. In 2012, Davis became the first player to resume playing after suffering three separate ACL injuries. He is a three-time Pro Bowler (2015, 2016 and 2017) and is the 2014 recipient of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
Davis leaves the Panthers among the franchise leaders in tackles, interceptions, forced fumbles and sacks. But more important than any statistic he has ever accrued during his time in Carolina, Davis leaves as an unquestionable leader and positive influence on his teammates and fans across the globe. Davis is the human embodiment of the phrase “Keep Pounding” and Panthers fans should consider themselves fortunate to have the privilege of watching him play for our team for the last 14 years.
