Vic Fangio hired as head coach of the Denver Broncos

The surly defensive coordinator is on his way to Denver.

When an NFL team goes 12-4 and wins their division, they’re sure to get competitors sniffing around their assistant coaches. That’s exactly what’s happened to the Chicago Bears.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has been hired as the next head coach of the Denver Broncos after helping Chicago’s defense become the most feared in the NFL in 2018, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

The Bears will no doubt feel the loss of their popular 60-year old assistant, but they should return just about every member of their starter defense. That’ll give the new defensive coordinator (whomever that may be) a lot of talent to work with from the start.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy will now look to fill the first, but likely not last, key member of his defensive coaching staff after retaining Fangio’s staff from a year ago. Nagy did add Bill Shuey as a defensive quality control coach last season, but everyone else was a holdover from the John Fox era. The transition towards 2019 has begun.
