2019 NFL mock draft: Packers back to Polite, Fant in first round

Jachai Polite and Noah Fant have landed on the Packers in many of SB Nation’s mock drafts. They did so again this week.

Typically for NFL teams with multiple first-round picks, draft season brings a series of wildly varying mocks to peruse. That hasn’t quite happened for the Green Bay Packers, who regularly end up with the same prospects. That trend continues with the latest mock draft from SB Nation’s Dan Kadar, who sees the team landing a familiar edge rusher and tight end.

12. Green Bay Packers: Jachai Polite, DE/OLB, Florida

There are a few pass rushers who can be cycled through with the 12th pick. That could lead Green Bay to dropping back slightly if the right trade is made available. One didn’t make sense this week, but it’s something to keep in mind. For now, the choice for Green Bay is back to Polite, the aggressive Florida edge rusher.

The idea of the Packers trading down from No. 12 makes sense if multiple pass rushers they like remain available, and general manager Brian Gutekunst certainly seems willing to entertain the idea after trading down last year. As for the prospect, Jachai Polite looks like a reasonable scheme fit for defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s scheme. At least until the combine and pro days, expect to see plenty of Polite talk as it relates to Green Bay.

30. Green Bay Packers: (via New Orleans): Noah Fant, TE, Iowa

Some see flashes of Travis Kelce in Fant’s game. If he’s anything close to that as a pro, imagine what Aaron Rodgers could do with that type of weapon. Fant can run a variety of routes and be lined up at multiple spots. He’s only average as a blocker, but he does enough to get by.

The Packers have landed fellow Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson in previous mocks. However, as Hockenson gains momentum during the draft process (Kadar projected him coming off the board before Green Bay’s first pick), Fant makes at least some sense as a backup plan should Gutekunst target a tight end at the end of Day 1.
