49ers get sixth round comp pick for Aaron Lynch

The NFL announced compensatory picks for the 2019 NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers received a sixth round pick for edge rusher Aaron Lynch. The pick will be No. 40, 212th overall. Arizona, New England, and Washington lead the way with four comp picks apiece. This pick gives the 49ers six in the upcoming draft, including the following:

Round 1: Own pick, No. 2 (No. 2 overall)
Round 2: Own pick, No. 4 (No. 36 overall)
Round 3: Own pick, No. 3 (No. 67 overall)
Round 4: Own pick, No. 2 (No. 104 overall)
Round 6: Own pick, No. 3 (No. 176 overall)
Round 6: Comp pick, No. 40 (No. 212 overall)

The 49ers traded away their fifth round pick for guard Laken Tomlinson, and traded away their seventh round pick for offensive tackle Shon Coleman.

The 49ers could find a diamond in the rough with their sixth round comp pick, but it is also a tradeable pick. The NFL used to not allow for trades, but they finally changed that policy for the 2017 NFL Draft.

The comp pick formula looks at players signed in free agency, and players who leave in free agency. If you cut a player, he does not count as a departure in the comp pick formula. The NFL does not explain the formula, but it includes a combination of salary, playing time, and postseason honors.

The 49ers had five departures and two signings count towards the formula. The departures included RB Carlos Hyde, OG Brandon Fusco, DE Aaron Lynch, CB Leon Hall, and TE Logan Paulsen. The signings included C Wesston Richburg and RB Jerick McKinnon. Although that leaves a net loss of three players, the 49ers only got one comp pick. They qualified for three picks, but will not receive two of them, “because the final numerical values of the compensatory free agents who were lost by those clubs ranked 33rd through 39th among the final numerical values of all compensatory selections.” The NFL only gives out 32 total comp picks.
