Good news for Philly, maybe?
Another potential first-round draft target for the Philadelphia Eagles is injured ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Last week, it was Mississippi State defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons who suffered an ACL injury. Now ESPN is reporting that Oklahoma wide receiver Marquise Brown had surgery on a LisFranc injury last month.
The good news is that Brown, unlike Simmons, isn’t expected to miss the 2019 season. Brown’s recovery is expected to have him “ready for summer training camp” beginning in late July.
In the meantime, Brown won’t be able to participate in testing drills at the NFL Combine or Oklahoma’s pro day. It remains to be seen if this will impact his draft stock.
There are a couple different ways to think about this Brown news as it impacts the Eagles. It’s possible that Brown — who Adam Schefter described as a “projected top 15 pick” — might actually fall to Philly’s pick at No. 25 overall now. Or maybe Brown would’ve been there all along and now he’ll fall even further to Philly’s first selection in the second round. Hard to say for sure.
In any case, Brown is a prospect the Eagles could easily be interested in drafting. We know that Eagles senior director of player personnel Tom Donahoe was in attendance for Brown’s monster performance against West Virginia where he had 11 receptions for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
Philadelphia has sorely lacked a reliable deep threat for too long now. The speedy Brown, who averaged 18.3 yards per reception in college, could be the Eagles’ new DeSean Jackson.
It’s possible Brown’s injury won’t have any impact on his stock but it could potentially give the Eagles a better chance of landing him than they previously had.
.@AdamSchefter's report that Oklahoma WR Marquise Brown underwent surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury is terrible news. A 2018 study conducted by S.K. Singh, et. al. showed that it's a particularly harrowing injury for offensive players: pic.twitter.com/3obeTMvL1n
