Bengals hire Anarumo as DC; Rams keep CB coach

The Rams have their up and coming CB coach back for 2019, but will this be has last year on staff?

The Cincinnati Bengals have hired Lou Anarumo to be their defensive coordinator for 2019 working under new Head Coach Zac Taylor, the former Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach. The hire means that Aubrey Pleasant, who was interviewed for the position and under consideration, will remain the Rams’ cornerbacks coach for 2019.

Anarumo was the defensive backs coach with the New York Giants last year following a six-year run with the Miami Dolphins under the same title. His hire leaves Pleasant to see out his third season as the Rams’ cornerbacks coach after coming over from the Washington Coach Employers though clearly he’s going to be sought after following this season.

The Anarumo hire fills the last coordinator vacancy in the NFL completing the primary hiring cycle for the 2019 season that saw Rams Head Coach Sean McVay’s coaching tree expand quite publicly.

Taylor taking the head coaching job in Cincy was the second McVay understudy to land a top job after former Rams and then Tennessee Titans Offensive Coordinator Matt LaFleur agreed to become the Green Bay Packers next head coach. Greg Olson, who was the Rams quarterbacks coach in 2017, became the Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator last year; he’s still working things over with Raiders head coach Jon Gruden as they look to build a new core in 2019 with three first-round picks and five selections in the top 66 of the 2019 NFL Draft.

And with the slightest tinge of nostalgia, it’s worth noting that former Rams Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo will be the Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator under Head Coach Andy Reid this year after a year away from NFL sidelines. Perhaps less of a tinge for former Rams Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams bringing his aggressive, swear jar-filling style to the New York Jets this year as the DC under HC Adam Gase.

And so the coaching carousel turns yet again. We’ll see what happens with Pleasant, Quarterbacks Coach/Passing Game Coordinator/Co-Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron and any other candidates next year.

For now, Pleasant will stick with the Rams for at least another season.
