Bills rank among teams with most needs according to Sports Illustrated

Thankfully, the Bills have plenty of cap space and ten picks to address those needs!

The Buffalo Bills took a step backwards in terms of their record during the 2018 season, finishing 6-10 and experiencing a three-game decline from 2017’s playoff-bound team that went 9-7.

That said, many Bills fans feel optimistic for the team’s future, with a slew of young talent like quarterback Josh Allen, cornerback Tre’Davious White, linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano, and more on the roster.

With ten selections in this April’s NFL Draft, including the No. 9 overall selection, and with nearly $79 million in available cap space (fourth-most in the league), the Bills certainly will have the means to go out and improve their team. Among Buffalo’s areas of need are improving the offensive line, wide receivers, running backs, tight ends, defensive tackles, defensive ends, and more cornerback depth among others.

With all those areas of need, where do the Bills rank among the teams with the most needs heading into the offseason? According to Andy Benoit of Sports Illustrated, Buffalo is the sixth-neediest team, trailing only the woebegone Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, and Washington.

Benoit, like many Bills fans, says Buffalo’s primary area of need is adding a mobile guard or a mobile center, and identified Mitch Morse, formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs, as the best potential free agent signing.

“The Bills must use their big, strong, swift QB, Josh Allen, on designed runs behind man-to-man blocking (similar to the ways the Panthers deploy Cam Newton). Success there starts with a mobile guard. Buffalo must find one who can pull-block across the formation, lending dimension to power runs and counters, as well as to play-action passes — tactics that best benefit Allen.”

My colleague Sean Murphy went into great detail about why signing Morse makes sense.

As for the rest of the needy teams, Benoit’s teams with the fewest needs: The Atlanta Falcons have the fewest needs, followed by the Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs.
