Broncos, Raiders could make draft trade options an intriguing option

Perception will play a big role in potentially creating room for a trade.

The San Francisco 49ers might be fully prepared to draft an edge rusher (or other position) with the No. 2 overall pick, but there is always the possibility of a move down the board. Several teams behind them are likely in search of a quarterback, and one or more of those teams might get aggressive in making sure they get the guy they want.

Enter Denver Broncos general manager John Elway.

It’s been a rough go for Elway trying to find a quarterback since Peyton Manning retired. The Broncos thought Paxton Lynch would be the answer, and he was not. They brought in Case Keenum after a big 2017 season in Minnesota and that didn’t work out.

Now, Elway might have a rookie in mind. According to Broncos beat writers, Elway is enamored with Missouri quarterback Drew Lock. The Broncos hold the tenth pick behind QB-needy teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants. We don’t know if Lock would slip down to the Broncos, but all that matters is the Broncos perception of whether or not he will slide.

Enter the Oakland Raiders.

Peter King reported on Monday that there is “lots of suspicion” that the Raiders will take a quarterback high in the draft but also keep Derek Carr. One person told King they might follow the Chiefs model of having a rookie spend a year learning under the veteran. Derek Carr is no Alex Smith, but maybe Jon Gruden thinks he can make it work.

I am a little skeptical the Raiders spend the No. 4 pick on the quarterback position, but for the purposes of teams behind them, it really doesn’t matter if they actually plan on doing that. All that matters is perception. If the perception is there, teams will be dialing up the Cardinals, 49ers, and Jets in hopes of jumping ahead of the Raiders. I have a feeling we don’t see a trade up for a quarterback, but I’ll maintain some hope!
