Colts are hopeful tight end Jack Doyle will be ready for training camp after hip surgery

Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle endured many ups and downs during his 2018-19 campaign — which ended with him on the injured reserve list as his teammates made an unbelievable playoff run.

Doyle will remain on the shelf until further notice.

The Colts announced Doyle underwent an offseason surgical procedure on his hip — which, along with a kidney injury, forced him to miss ten games.

Back in January, Doyle said he wouldn’t rule offseason surgery to make sure his hip healed properly. Before the hip injury occurred, the veteran tight end was diagnosed with a lacerated kidney, resulting in surgery. The kidney issue forced Doyle several nights in a hospital.

“It’s tough to be hurt, tough to be out,” Doyle said back in January. “Just one of those years. I’ve been fairly lucky in the health department (in the past). Just another challenge ahead. I’m trying to get stronger and better and back out there.”

Doyle first suffered the hip injury in a road win against the Washington Redskins.

“The kidney’s good,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “We’re in good shape.”

Ballard expects Doyle to miss OTAs.

“The surgery was good,” Ballard said. “He’s rehabbing good. He will be, my guess is he probably won’t do anything through OTAs. Look, Jack is a vet player, I trust him. I trust that he’s going to do everything he can to get back. We’re shooting for the start of training camp.”
