Cowboys and Patriots to open 2019? Good times.
Today marks the official end of on-the-field activity for the 2018 NFL season. The New England Patriots will battle the Los Angeles Rams in Atlanta’s Mercedes Dome for the Super Bowl. New England looks to continue its dynasty, while Sean McVay and the young Rams attempt to knock off the evil empire of football.
When the Super Bowl is over, it is never too early to look ahead to the 2019 season. The offseason will fly by quicker than we think.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday morning that the NFL is looking into a handful of games to open next season up. The Patriots-Chiefs and Rams-Saints are among the potential matchups. Schefter also says that the Dallas Cowboys are in the mix to play the season’s first game.
If the Rams win the Super Bowl, they could host the Saints in the 2019 Kickoff game, a league source told ESPN. And if the Patriots win on Sunday, they could host the Chiefs in the opener, according to the source.
There also are other options for the NFL to consider -- the Seahawks and Bears as potential opponents for the Rams, and the Steelers, Cowboys and Browns for the Patriots.
It appears as if the first two games mentioned are in the lead for the spot, but it is interesting that the NFL is considering putting the Cowboys in that slot. Dallas rebounded from a 3-5 record after eight games to a playoff berth and a loss in the Divisional Round. With staff adjustments and a full season of Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and Amari Cooper together, the Cowboys could have a fun season in 2019.
The Cowboys are scheduled to head up to the Boston area to take on the Patriots. The last time these two franchises met on the gridiron, New England got the victory in AT&T Stadium back in 2011. Here’s hoping that the Cowboys avenge that loss next time around.
America’s Team versus the (potential) Super Bowl champs to open the football season; how cool would that be?
