No, your screen is not broken, Devin Singletary has in fact scored 66 rushing touchdowns in 3 seasons, including one were he rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and 32 touchdowns. Nicknamed “Motor” it’s hard to believe that the former 2-star prospect from Delray Beach, Florida would become one of the best running backs in college football the past few seasons. Singletary has drawn strong comparisons to LeSean McCoy and when you watch him play it’s easy to see why. He dominated his level of competition in the CUSA and did pretty well against higher quality opponents liked Oklahoma and UCF this season. He probably has some of if not the best shiftiness, agility, quickness, and contact balance in this class. With his ability he simply can make plays that not many other running backs can. He was the programs first AP All-American (second team) after his 2017 campaign where he put up insane numbers. Singletary has the chance to become the highest drafted player in FAU history. If he has a good showing at the combine he will be. He would be a prime target for many teams in need of a running back. Should he ‘slide’ past those possibilities for any reason should the Redskins consider adding him?

Strengths

• Excellent athleticism, speed, agility, elusiveness, and balance. Prolific player who dominated his conference as well as against top competition.
• Excellent lateral speed, quickness, and agility. Cutting ability is his calling card and its so impressive. He has the ability to make something out of nothing. Decisive and rarely dances in the backfield can see multiple levels ahead and once he see’s his path he’s bursting through it. Fluid runner.
• Has a bit of power to him and excellent balance can “pinball” off opponents and keep his feet. Excellent break tackle ability. Tough runner who can get the extra yards through effort.
• Definitely a player who can be a feature running back with workhorse ability. Decent at pass protection as well. Most importantly he improved his ball security. After 4 fumbles on 301 carries in 2017 he reduced that to 1 fumble on 261 carries this year.

Weaknesses

• Lots of wear on him already he has 714 carries in 3 seasons. Thats a lot. To his credit he is pretty durable I had to go back to the spring where he missed a spring game because of a hamstring but he’s been healthy all year. Still with that about of carried under is belt isn’t a stretch to wonder how long he’ll last in the NFL.
• I haven’t seen much of him as a receiver. He was open on a lot of plays where he ran a flat out of the backfield but the QB didn’t target him all that often. He might be fine in this area but it’s a question going into the combine as well as if he is an every down back as well.
• Ran out of the shotgun the majority if not the entirety of his career. Could be fine for some teams but for others he will have to prove his skills translate to typical pro running formations.

How He Would Fit On The Redskins

I know a lot of people want Adrian Peterson re-signed given what he did last year. It was remarkable given the circumstances of age, ol injury, team chemistry etc. Peterson is closer to the end of his career than the beginning though. Can you imagine a healthy Derrius Guice and Devin Singletary on the field? Both have the skills and ability to make some special plays on the field, they both can take it to the house, they both also can carry the workload, and they both would represent the future. Drafting another running back this high is sure to not be ideal for some people but given the presumed changes to the Redskins offense by way of a new offensive coordinator it could be an interesting idea and it would definitely signal a change in offensive philosophy. Having two backs like this on the roster has several benefits: they both can remain fresh and hopefully the probability of injury goes way down. Also when one goes off the field you really don’t lose a whole lot. Of course the Redskins would be one of the few if not the only team to invest so many high draft resources into the RB position with intentions of splitting time (only the Falcon’s come to mind but Freeman and Coleman were 4th and 3rd rounders respectively). This brings me to my last pitch about why this isn’t the worst idea. The Redskins have no quarterback. Yes it’s true, I’m not sure who you expect to come in here and make the passing offense respectable but the odds are that they won’t. Even if the Redskins drafted a QB in round 1 it would be wise for the Redskins to become a run heavy team while the rest of the offense finds it’s bearings.
