Friday Cheese Curds: Peppers, Shields, Bakh have different takes on McCarthy’s firing

Julius Peppers, Sam Shields, and David Bakhtiari all discussed their former coach this week.

When the Green Bay Packers fired head coach Mike McCarthy in December, reactions from the teams fans were varied, but most — at least according to surveys here at Acme Packing Company — approved of the decision.

As for people who played for him in Green Bay? Well, those opinions were a little more varied.

This week, one of McCarthy’s former players weighed in on his old coach’s firing from Super Bowl media days. Another is retiring, but provided his thoughts in a personal blog post about his career. And a third — one of the Packers’ most important players — spoke on Thursday about the biggest problem he saw towards the end of McCarthy’s tenure.

As we get ready for Super Bowl LIII on Sunday, here’s a look back from some of these current and former Packers stars at the franchise’s biggest move in over a decade.

David Bakhtiari says complacency is a problem for Green Bay Packers | ESPN
While Bakh has a fun-loving personality outside of football, there's no question that he is a no-nonsense guy when it comes to his job. So it should come as no surprise that he would be put off by McCarthy and his staff choosing not to penalize players for being late or other transgressions.

17 and Out, by Julius Peppers | The Players Tribune
Peppers is officially hanging up the cleats, retiring after a stellar 17-year career that will surely land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Read his thoughts here, wherein he thanks Packers fans, Mike McCarthy (who he says got a "raw deal" this year), and Aaron Rodgers, who "(made) me believe that somehow, a Hail Mary can be a high-percentage throw."

Sam Shields not surprised Packers fired Mike McCarthy | 247sports
Unlike Peppers, Shields -- who will suit up on Sunday for his second Super Bowl appearance -- said he "kind of figured" McCarthy's firing was coming.

Shawn Mennenga brings the Dave Toub approach to Packers' special teams - ESPN
As someone who really wanted the Packers to at least interview Toub for the head coaching job, I'm glad to see that Mennenga's philosophies and schemes on special teams derive from Toub's

Ted Fritsch was hero for Packers in ’44 NFL title game | Packers.com
Ted Fritsch isn't a name that a lot of Packers fans are likely to know (unless they're affiliated with Green Bay Notre Dame high school), but he was a two-time All-Pro who was the key to the Packers' 1944 championship team and kicked the first 50-yard field goal in team history.

Super Bowl 2019: Poll shows NFL fans want Patriots to lose, think they’ll win - SBNation.com
Three-quarters of fans surveyed by SB Nation want the Rams to win on Sunday, but almost 70% think the Patriots will get the win.

NJ Man Caught on Video Tossing Ice Cubes Onto Floor, Faking Fall for Insurance Claim: Prosecutors - NBC New York
If you're going to try to fake an injury for insurance money by deliberately throwing ice onto the floor so you can slip and fall on it, make sure there aren't security cameras that can catch you doing it.
