Gerald McCoy will be back with the Bucs

The veteran defensive lineman will continue his career in Tampa Bay.

This was slowly becoming a no-brainer.

After much speculation and debate, it appears the Buccaneers new coaching staff under new head coach Bruce Arians have begun making decisions on who will be back on the roster for 2019. Veteran defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is one of them, this per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Bucs coach Bruce Arians and his staff have evaluated McCoy’s performance and believe he will be a good fit in the 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

McCoy, 31, will also reportedly keep his 2019 salary of $13-million. However, there is still time left for some form of restructuring if both sides choose to do so.

Many feel McCoy would not have been a fit in a 3-4 base defense. From the start that wasn’t necessarily true since the Bucs have flirted with that alignment in the past and the 10-year veteran also played on the end of Oklahoma’s defensive line on several occasions during his college career.

Regardless, it’s already known that under new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles the defense won’t be exclusive to a 3-4 alignment. So bringing back a guy like McCoy could have been in their plans all along.
