Giants news, 1/13: Kliff Kingsbury’s words won’t quell Josh Rosen chatter

Josh Rosen

Cardinals coach says “Josh is our guy.” But, does he mean it?

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Are the Arizona Cardinals committed to Josh Rosen as their quarterback of the future or not?

Last year as head coach of Texas Tech, now-Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said he would select Kyler Murray No. 1 overall if he had the chance. At the time, that was a pipe dream. It might also have just been buildup for that week’s Texas Tech-Oklahoma game.

Now, though, Kingsbury coaches the team with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and Murray says he is all-in on football.

So?

Tuesday, Kingsbury tried to squash the Murray to the Cardinals chatter.

“Our feelings toward Josh haven’t waned or changed,” Kingsbury said. “I get that we have the first pick and there are going to be a million scenarios, and over the next three months they are going to come up. But Josh is our guy.”

Rosen, of course, was part of the deep 2018 draft class of quarterbacks the Giants passed on when the selected Saqoun Barkley, who went on to become the Offensive Rookie of the Year, No. 2 overall.

Is Kingsbury to be believed? Is he just saying what he needs to say in the run-up to this year’s draft? The Giants are not believed to be interested in Murray. Might the Giants be interested in Rosen, though, if the Cardinals make him available?

As Paul Schwartz of the New York Post wrote, “Imagine if the Giants eventually came out of the 2018 draft with Barkley and Rosen?”

The Giants passed on Rosen a year ago, with the Cardinals taking him 10th overall. He had an awful rookie season for the Cardinals completing just 55.2 percent of his passes, throwing 14 interceptions to just 11 touchdown passes and compiling a 66.7 passer rating. The Cardinals, though, were an awful 3-13 team that earned the first overall pick and fired its head coach. Hard to pass judgment on Rosen because of that.

There is a belief that the only quarterback in this draft the Giants see as worth a first-round pick is Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State. Would the Giants commit the No. 6 pick to him, or move up to get him? Schwartz writes that “Anyone who indicates the Giants, right now, are sold or sour on Haskins is blowing smoke.”

If the Giants believe Rosen is a prospect equal to, or better than, Haskins making a move to get him does make some sense. Especially if the Giants can hold on to their sixth overall pick this year while doing it.

So, Kingsbury’s “Josh is our guy” comment was a nice try. Actions speak louder than words, though, and his words won’t mean anything until we get to the draft and the Cardinals prove whether or not Kingsbury was serious.

Of course the Giants are on this list, which ignores the belief that they believe Murray is too small.
