The Denver Broncos are on the hunt for a franchise quarterback, but is Oklahoma sensation Kyler Murray worth gambling on?
Good morning, Broncos Country.
It’s no secret that the Denver Broncos are on the prowl looking for a franchise quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft. Over the past several months, the team has continuously been linked to Missouri signal caller Drew Lock, but with Oklahoma sensation and Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray officially choosing football over baseball the other day — speculation and intrigue from fans across Broncos Country on his fit in the Mile High City has reached new levels. Adam Malnati and Ian St. Clair discussed Murray on the latest MHR Radio Podcast.
But is the highly talented, yet controversial prospect worth the risk and extraordinary gamble for the Broncos in the first round? Let’s examine the pros and cons of Murray.
The Broncos need energy back in that locker room. I mean they really need energy back in the whole building. They need someone the guys can look at and feel like they have a chance to win every week. The one guy that can do that in this draft is @TheKylerMurray Make it happen!!

On one side of the coin, Murray offers dual-threat capability as both a runner and passer. When compared to any other prospect at the position he is entirely in a league of his own with respect to athleticism. In his only year as a starter with the Sooners, he put up uncanny numbers and showed tremendous ability to extend plays and throw successfully on the move outside of the pocket. On top of that, he had a penchant for completing jaw-dropping throws down the field no matter where he planted and took his shot. There aren’t many prospects that have as much potential as Murray, but it will take a special team with coordinators who are willing to completely revamp their offense to cater to what he does well in order for him to succeed immediately.
There’s no disputing the talent he possesses, but it’s hard to not be cautious and admit he has a tremendous bust factor that will make many NFL general managers pump the breaks on him.
The primary concern revolves around his his diminutive frame, which has many scouts and draft analysts wondering if he can physically hold up to the rigors of the pro game. Will his unique play style be able to translate adequately to the NFL? Only time will tell. If it does, he will be an absolute trend-setter and exception to the rule that has prevailed the league for decades. The second criticism is lack of experience — the fact that he is only a one-year wonder and put up great numbers in a ‘friendly’ offense in a conference that isn’t known for playing much defense.
Why I love the NFL Draft process so much. I've spoken to several offensive coaches, GMs, scouts, etc.

Some love Kyler Murray. Some love Dwayne Haskins. Some are big on Drew Lock. I've got one who's big on Daniel Jones. And some are down on all four.
The beauty of the process.
Additional critiques are his issues throwing in the middle of the field, as well as a penchant for locking on to his first-read. While these aspects of his game are certainly correctable, it will likely take time before he improves upon mental and mechanical concerns that could prove to be a liability early on in his career. Last but not least, the question that will be asked to him ad nauseam at the NFL Combine and throughout the draft process is his true love and desire to become a great quarterback in the league. While most fans may not be overly concerned with his early indecision regarding whether or not to pursue football or baseball, team decision makers most certainly are going to want to gauge his commitment moving forward.
There’s no denying that Murray has the skills and potential to be a revolutionary player at the position and a game-changer for any franchise if he hits on cylinders. The true question is whether or not he is the type of quarterback John Elway and his staff are willing to bet their bottom dollar on (or in other words, potentially risk their jobs over) is a whole other story — and one that will continue to unfold as April approaches. Let us know your thoughts on the prospect of Murray being the next quarterback of the Broncos in the comments section.
