Horse Tracks: Mile High Saluting Marlin Briscoe

As a Broncos fan, if you don’t know about Marlin Briscoe, here’s your chance.

While there wasn’t much in the way of competitive football in Denver during their first decade in professional football, there were some legitimate firsts for which Broncos fans can be proud. Denver’s Al Carmichael scored the first touchdown in American Football League history. The first win in the AFL came that same night when the Broncos beat the Boston Patriots. Following the AFL-NFL merger agreement, the Broncos were the first AFL team to beat an NFL team, the Detroit Lions, during the 1966 preseason. However, one of the most important firsts of that era involved Denver Broncos quarterback Marlin Briscoe.

Who was Marlin Briscoe?

Marlin was the first starting black quarterback in professional football, be it AFL or NFL.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Marlin about what it was like playing for the Denver Broncos during that 1968 season. With names like Floyd Little and Lou Saban playing large roles in his story, his in an interesting one to hear.

Have you heard about the time that Broncos Hall of Famer Floyd Little was fired on the field by Lou Saban? Here’s a mix of interviews with Little and Briscoe describing that incredible day.

To learn more about Marlin, here are links to Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 of the interview. Broncos history is pretty awesome and Marlin Briscoe’s part in it is remarkable. Mile High Salute to you, Marlin!
