Since training camp in the summer, we’ve been keeping tabs on how former Jets players still in the NFL were doing with their new teams. Now that the season is over, we’re providing a final update of how they performed during the season and their status heading into the new league year.
Having looked at more recent Jets within the last year in the first installment, we’ll be looking at some ex-Jets who left the team prior to cutdown day last season in this installment.
As ever, this list is intended to be exhaustive, but if we missed anyone, let us know in the comments.
- Chris Ivory, RB, Bills
Ivory is now into his thirties and could be a cap casualty after averaging just 3.3 yards per carry in the first year of his two-year deal with the Bills. Ivory also had 13 receptions on which he averaged 15.8 yards per catch. He ended up with 590 yards from scrimmage but just one touchdown.
- Kerry Hyder, DL, Lions
Hyder is a pending restricted free agent after a disappointing season which saw him record six tackles and one sack in seven games. He had racked up eight sacks in 2016 but missed the 2017 season through injury.
Smith played a total of seven games with the Cardinals and Raiders, but recorded just three tackles, one tackle for loss and a quarterback hit before ending up on injured reserve. He hasn’t had a sack since 2015, when he had seven, and is now a pending unrestricted free agent.
Richardson was on a one-year prove-it deal with the Vikings and only had 1.5 sacks after 10 games. However, he ended the year with 49 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits. It will be interesting to see how much the 28-year old commands in free agency.
- Anthony Firkser, TE, Titans
Firkser failed to make the Jets as a fullback but has carved out a niche for himself as a tight end in Tennessee. He came up with 19 catches on 20 targets for 225 yards, with his first NFL touchdown coming in the win over the Jets.
- Austin Calitro, LB, Seahawks
Calitro ended up producing well in Seattle, with 45 tackles, including three for loss, one pass defensed and one quarterback hit. He started five games for them and they control his rights as an exclusive rights free agent.
- Mike Liedtke, OL, Bucs
Liedtke made his way onto the Bucs’ active roster and was active for nine games but only saw action on four offensive snaps.
- Jesse Davis, OL, Dolphins
Davis started every game for Adam Gase last year but mostly struggled as he was 45th out of 55 qualifying guards in terms of his run blocking grade according to Pro Football Focus. He also gave up seven sacks and had six penalties.
- Shelby Harris, DL, Broncos
Harris played in a rotational role off the bench but wasn’t able to emulate his 2017 season, where he started six games and recorded 5.5 sacks. However, he did set career-highs in terms of tackles (39) and tackles for loss (eight). He ended up with 1.5 sacks and seven quarterback hits, but his biggest moment was a game-clinching interception against the Steelers.
- Raheem Mostert, RB/KR, 49ers
As noted in our previous update, Mostert averaged almost eight yards a carry as he racked up 261 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown, and added six catches but then suffered a season-ending arm injury.
- Bruce Ellington, WR/KR/PR, Texans/Lions
Ellington was released by the Lions last week, having joined them in November. Ellington caught 23 passes in four games, but for less than six yards per reception. Earlier in the year, he caught eight passes for 92 yards and a touchdown with the Texans before getting hurt.
- Tommy Bohanon, FB, Jaguars
Bohanon is a pending unrestricted free agent after an underwhelming second season as the Jags starting fullback. He caught six passes for 41 yards and carried once for no gain.
- Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Bucs
The 35-year old Fitzpatrick is not ready to retire yet after having some surprisingly productive performances in relief of Jameis Winston last year. In seven starts, he posted a quarterback rating of over 100 and led the NFL in yards per attempt and yards per completion. The Bucs lost five of those seven though as Fitzpatrick ended up with 12 interceptions and eventually handed the job back to Winston.
- Brandon Marshall, WR, Seahawks/Saints
Marshall’s career is probably over after he signed with the Saints but never made it onto the field with them before being released. He had started twice in Seattle and ended up with 11 receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown in seven games.
- Marcus Gilchrist, S, Raiders
Gilchrist had a productive year as a starter with the Raiders, ending up with 58 tackles, three interceptions and six passes defensed. All three of his interceptions came in the second half of the year. Gilchrist is now a pending free agent.
- Stevan Ridley, RB, Steelers
Ridley made 10 appearances in a reserve role with the Steelers, rushing for a disappointing 80 yards on 29 carries, although he did score one touchdown. He added three catches for 18 yards. Ridley is a pending free agent.
Smith is also a pending free agent having been limited to mop-up duties behind Philip Rivers. In five appearances, Smith completed one of his four passes for eight yards and was sacked for a 16-yard loss, as well as taking a few knees.
- Jarvis Jenkins, DL, Chiefs
Jenkins was waived in December having played in a rotational role off the bench in Kansas City. He ended up with six tackles in 12 games.
- Matt Slauson, RG, Colts
Slauson recently announced his retirement due to a back injury that knocked him out for the season in October. He started the first five games of the year, all at right guard.
- Matt LaCosse, TE, Broncos
LaCosse got plenty of opportunities to play this season due to injuries. He ended up with 24 catches for 250 yards and his first career touchdown. The Broncos retain his rights as an exclusive rights free agent.
- Vladimir Ducasse, G, Bills
Ducasse didn’t play again after being benched for Wyatt Teller in week nine. He had been grading out well in pass protection but struggling in the running game. Ducasse is under contract for 2019 but a probable cap casualty as the Bills looks set to stick with Teller.
- Nick Bellore, FB, Lions
Bellore played fullback all year for the Lions and did a decent job as a blocking back. He added four catches and seven special teams tackles. He’s a pending unrestricted free agent.
- Andrew Sendejo, S, Vikings
Sendejo had 27 tackles and a pass defensed in the first five games of the year, but then got injured and ended up on injured reserve. He’s entering the final year of a four-year deal.
- Oday Aboushi, OL, Cardinals
Arizona signed Aboushi to a one-year deal in the middle of the season and he ended up starting the last six games. He graded out reasonably well but gave up four sacks and had three penalties.
- Brian Parker, TE, Broncos
Like LaCosse, Parker benefited from injuries as he was elevated from the practice squad and ended up playing in 10 games with one start. He caught five passes for 33 yards. Parker is also an exclusive rights free agent.
- Shamarko Thomas, S, Broncos
Thomas played mostly in a special teams role with the Broncos in 2018, making six appearances and recording seven tackles. He was released in December but they’ve since signed him to a futures deal.
- Austin Howard, OL, Washington
Howard joined Washington in the middle of an injury crisis but didn’t last too long before he ended up on injured reserve himself. He made one start but struggled and played only 33 snaps before he suffered a season-ending hip injury. He is a pending unrestricted free agent.
- Jerome Cunningham, TE, Titans/Lions
Having had a stint on the Titans practice squad and two stints on Detroit’s practice squad, Cunningham was activated by the Lions in December, seeing his first NFL action since 2015. He played three games, but his only target was an incompletion. He is under contract for 2019, though.
- Kyle Friend, OL, Cardinals/Browns
Friend was released from the Cardinals practice squad during the year, but has since signed a futures deal with the Browns.
- Ronald Martin, S, Colts
Martin spent the entire year on injured reserve after getting hurt in preseason. He’s a pending exclusive rights free agent.
- Troymaine Pope, RB, Texans/Seahawks/Chargers
Pope was released by Houston in final cuts, then spent some time on the Seahawks’ practice squad. In November, the Chargers signed Pope to their practice squad and then was added to the active roster a few weeks later but didn’t see action. They cut him during the postseason, but signed him to a futures deal at the end of the year.
- Brandon Wilds, RB, Jaguars/Cardinals
Wilds was signed to the Cardinals’ practice squad in October and remained there until the end of the season, before signing a futures deal. Earlier in the year, he carried six times for 15 yards in regular season action with the Jaguars.
- Robensen Therezie, S, Colts
Therezie began the year on injured reserve but was released before the end of September and hasn’t signed with a team since.
- Shane Wynn, RB/KR, Saints
Wynn signed to the Saints’ practice squad in October but didn’t get onto the active roster and hasn’t signed with anyone for 2019.
- Jeremiah George, LB, Colts
George was released from the Colts’ practice squad in September and hasn’t signed with anyone since that time.
- Dexter McDougle, CB, Lions/Eagles
Having been released in final cuts by the Lions, McDougle was briefly with the Eagles in the middle of the season before being cut. He recorded five tackles and a pass defensed in two games with the Eagles but is now playing in the AAF.
- Mark Sanchez, QB, Washington
Having signed in November, Sanchez got an immediate chance to play in Washington, replacing the injured Colt McCoy in the game after Alex Smith’s season ending leg injury and completing 13 of 21 passes for 100 yards and an interception. He started the next game but was benched at halftime, having completed six of 14 passes for 38 yards with two interceptions. It seems unlikely anyone will sign him during the offseason.
- Josh Johnson, QB, Washington
Johnson replaced Sanchez at halftime in his lone start and retained the starter’s role until the end of the season. He won one of his three starts, completing 57 percent of his passes for 590 yards and three scores, while also rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown. He also threw four interceptions, though.
- Mike Nugent, K, Raiders
Nugent was out of the league for most of the season, but saw action in three games with the Raiders down the stretch. He made all five of his field goal attempts but did miss an extra point in a game the Raiders lost by one. He’s now a free agent again.
- Patrick Scales, LS, Chicago
Having missed the entire 2017 season with a torn ACL, Scales was back with the Bears for 2018 and played in every game. He also recorded the first two tackles of his career.
- Jake Ceresna, DL, NY Giants
Ceresna was briefly in camp with the Jets in 2016 but has since been playing in Canada. He signed a futures deal with the Giants at the end of the regular season.
