Jets announce their complete coaching staff

Over the last few weeks I found it a bit odd how little we had heard about Adam Gase’s coaching staff. The Jets had announced their coordinators, but their position coaches had not been named. Apparently the team was waiting for the full staff to be in place to make an announcement. Today the team announced its full staff.

The coaching staff:

Head Coach

Adam Gase - Head Coach

Coordinators

Dowell Loggains - Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach

Gregg Williams - Defensive Coordinator

Brant Boyer - Special Teams Coach

Offensive Assistants

Shawn Jefferson - Assistant Head Coach Offense/Wide Receivers Coach

Jim Bob Cooter - Running Backs Coach

John Dunn - Tight Ends Coach

Frank Pollack - Offensive Line Coach

Derek Frazier - Assistant Offensive Line Coach

Bo Hardegree - Offensive Assistant Coach

Defensive Assistants

Frank Bush - Assistant Head Coach Defense/Inside Linebackers Coach

Andre Carter - Defensive Line Coach

Joe Vitt - Senior Defensive Assistant/Outside Linebackers Coach

Dennard Wilson - Defensive Backs Coach/Passing Game Coordinator

Steve Jackson - Assistant Defensive Backs Coach

Robby Brown - Defensive Assistant Coach

Blake Williams - Defensive Assistant Coach

Eric Sanders - Defensive Assistant Coach

Special Teams Assistant

Jeff Hammerschmidt - Assistant Special Teams Coach

Strength and Conditioning Assistants

Justus Galac - Strength and Conditioning Coach

Aaron McLaurin - Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

Joseph Giacobbe - Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

Thoughts:

  • I’m pleased with the hiring of Jim Bob Cooter to the offensive coaching staff. I respect him as an offensive mind. While he nominally will coach the running backs, all coaches typically have responsibilities in the game plan process that go beyond the position they coach. I think having him in the room will be a plus. I’d prefer Cooter to be the offensive coordinator, and Dowell Loggains to coach the running backs, but I can’t control that. I’m just happy to have Cooter on board.
  • Given the league-wide struggles to develop linemen, I wanted to see the Jets hire a veteran position coach on the offensive line. I got my wish with the well-regarded Frank Pollack. This hire won’t matter much unless the Jets bring in some young talent on the offensive line. But if they do, that talent will hopefully be in good hands.
  • Eight coaches are holdovers from Todd Bowles’ staff, but they are mainly low level assistants and the strength and conditioning coaches. Brant Boyer and Dennard Wilson are the only holdovers from the position coach or coordinator ranks.
  • I’m also happy Gase didn’t draw too heavily from an unsuccessful Miami coaching staff. Less than half of the coordinators and position coaches worked with him in Miami.
  • There are family ties to this staff with Vitt being Gase’s father-in-law, and Blake Williams being Gregg Williams’ son. Both Vitt and the younger Williams have positive attributes, but I must admit I’m not a big fan of nepotism.
