Jim Zorn reportedly to be named head coach/GM of Seattle XFL team

Starting in 2020, the Seattle Seahawks won’t be the only professional gridiron football team in town.

The relaunch of the XFL will include a team in Seattle, with a press conference coming on Monday, February 25th from CenturyLink Field to announce the team’s head coach/general manager. According to reporter Aaron Oster, Seattle is expected to have former Seahawks QB Jim Zorn appointed to those positions.

On Thursday, the Washington DC team named former Indianapolis Colts and Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton as head coach/GM. Ex-Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops will join Dallas’ franchise.

Zorn, of course, was the Seahawks’ first quarterback in franchise history back in 1976, and was the team’s starter until Dave Krieg took over the job in 1983. He remained the team’s backup until 1984. On the coaching front, Zorn was Seattle’s quarterbacks coach from 2001-2007 under Mike Holmgren, before landing a head coaching gig with Washington in 2008. This was memorably a disaster, as he started 6-2 with the Skins, only to go 6-18 in his final 24 games. Washington missed the playoffs in 2008 and 2009, and Zorn was fired by Dan Snyder.

His most recent pro football job was QBs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012, but now he appears to be returning to the city where he’s beloved, particularly by Seahawks fans who lived through the early years of the team’s existence. We can only hope that if he is going to be a part of this XFL team, that he does not feel the urge to run this trick play again.
