Is it still Drew Lock or bust for John Elway? The Joe Flacco trade has muddied that picture some.
If you somehow missed it, the Denver Broncos agreed in principle to trade for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco for a 4th round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. This naturally threw a bit of a wrench into the Broncos potential draft plans moving forward. It seemed like quarterback or bust previously, but is it now?
According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, the Broncos now have some flexibility in the first-round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
With Flacco, Broncos now can take best available player with No. 10 draft pick (cornerback is likely top priority), draft a QB in mid rounds (they still need a young QB) and go back into stronger QB class for 2020 draft. #9sports

The Drew Lock to the Broncos in the first-round hype was widespread during the Senior Bowl and prior. General Manager John Elway was apparently “smitten” with Missouri quarterback Drew Lock and all signs early on pointed to the Broncos selecting the big armed quarterback with their 10th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Now, does this change things? According to Mike Klis it does, but what about the Broncos rumored/reported love affair with Drew Lock? Especially with reports/rumors that Elway told Lock that he would select him with the 10th overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft?
Interesting context of this Broncos trade:

John Elway told Drew Lock at the Senior Bowl he would be a top-10 pick.
Does it mean Elway is worried Lock won’t make it to Denver’s No. 10 pick?
Or could he still draft Lock there? (Or was Elway just blowing smoke?)
Hmm ...
My thoughts are this. I don’t think the addition of Flacco changes the Broncos draft plans much if at all. Flacco just replaces Keenum’s role as stop gap quarterback. He might be around longer than 2019, but the Broncos still need a quarterback of the future on their roster.
Sure, they can wait until 2020, but you don’t make this move for Flacco if you feel like you will be in striking distance to acquire the top quarterbacks in the 2020 draft without giving up a bunch in return. You’re picking in the top 10 for a second-straight year, apparently love Lock, and need a quarterback of the future.
So we shall see how that plays out moving forward.
As for the prospects the Broncos could target with the 10th overall pick, there are plenty of defensive prospects, offensive tackle prospects, a inside linebacker, and potentially a highly rated tight end prospect there for their taking.
- LSU ILB, Devin White
- LSU CB, Greedy Williams
- Washinton CB, Byron Murphy
- Oklahoma OT, Cody Ford
- Geogria CB, DeAndre Baker
- Iowa TE, T.J. Hockenson
- Florida OT, Jawaan Taylor
- Houston DT, Ed Oliver
Those are the names I’d consider in play for the Broncos at the 10th overall pick that are not named Drew Lock. Could they decide to pass on a quarterback in the first-round and select one of these guys, or roll the dice on Lock at 10 if he is there?
We have a few months to figure that out. For now, all we can do is debate and try to piece together the Broncos plans at quarterback.
