Goodwin did say he’s down for whatever will help get the 49ers a Super Bowl victory.
Rumors have been swirling around Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown about his future in the NFL. By all accounts he wants out of Pittsburgh, and we have heard from Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens that Brown would like to join the San Francisco 49ers. The Steelers are reportedly not getting the kinds of offers they’d like, and so we’re in a bit of a holding pattern.
49ers players have been active on social media interacting with Brown, but Super Bowl week brought an opportunity for wide receiver Marquise Goodwin to talk about the rumors. He was promoting mophie, a wireless charger, and took some time to chat with USA Today’s Trysta Krick. You can watch the video above, or click here.
He talked about expectations and Jimmy Garoppolo’s rehab, but Krick also asked him if he was paying attention to the rumors, and what he thought about them. He acknowledged seeing Brown’s Instagram posts, but he said, “It’s not something that I spend a lot of time thinking over.” He followed that with, “I see me as the A.B. of our team.”
Goodwin said he’s down for whatever will help get the Lombardi Trophy, but it’s not surprising he would offer up that kind of confidence. Goodwin had a breakout season in 2017, but injuries and a personal tragedy cut short his 2018 season. The 49ers signed him to a three-year extension last spring, inking him through 2021.
Kendrick Bourne and Dante Pettis emerged in Goodwin and Pierre Garçon’s absences. Garçon is unlikely to be back in 2019, but Goodwin is likely to remain around. The question is how he bounces back, and how the 49ers improve the depth chart at the position. They are unlikely to use their first round pick on the position, but they do have plenty of money to invest. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have talked about adding another playmaker. It could be a tight end to complement George Kittle, but they are in a position to add some veteran talent if they want. Whether it’s Antonio Brown, a free agent, or somebody else will be a big story heading into March.
