Mel Kiper’s 2019 NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Browns taking DT Dexter Lawrence

The big defensive tackle is becoming a popular pick for Cleveland.

Mel Kiper of ESPN released his second mock draft of the year last week. To compare, here is who he had the Cleveland Browns taking in his first mock draft:

Kiper 1.0: DT Jeffery Simmons

Selecting a defensive tackle continues to be a hot pick in these mock drafts for Cleveland. Simmons suffered an ACL tear a couple of weeks ago, though, so that meant Kiper had to look further on his draft board for another candidate. It’s the same guy that the MMQB has Cleveland selecting:

No. 17: Cleveland Browns - DT Dexter Lawrence, Clemson - “I had Mississippi State’s Jeffery Simmons here in my first Mock Draft, but he tore his ACL and could drop to Day 2. The massive 6-foot-5, 340-pound Lawrence is a different kind of player -- he’s not as good of a pass-rusher as Simmons -- but he’d fit next to Larry Ogunjobi, who has come into his own. I’ve been told to expect Lawrence to work out well at the combine, too. GM John Dorsey could also try to get a weapon for Baker Mayfield here.”

In Todd McShay’s last mock draft, he had the Browns selecting Clemson’s other defensive tackle, Christian Wilkins. But Lawrence is massive in size, and as Kiper points out, would be penciled in right next to DT Larry Ogunjobi as the team essentially replaces the void they left by trading away DT Danny Shelton last year.

If you can’t see the rest of Kiper’s mock draft, you can peek at it here:
