Meeting with the media on Wednesday from the combine in Indianapolis, Raiders GM Mike Mayock for the second time since he was hired as the teams new general manager supported his quarterback.
“I think Derek Carr is a franchise quarterback,” Mayock told reporters at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine. “Is it a coach and GM’s job to always keep your eye out for ways to improve the position? Yes. But it’s really hard to improve on Derek Carr.”
These comments suggest that Gruden and Mayock are comfortable with Carr going forward and do not plan to use an early pick on a future replacement. However, you do get the feeling that if there is someone available later in the draft that they believe offers some value and upside then it would be wise to invest in the position.
Mayock also spoke highly of back up quarterback AJ McCarron, who the Raiders traded for last year.
“I mean we’ve got a young quarterback that we think is a franchise quarterback, thats going to be 28 years old in March. So we’re pretty happy with where we are especially with our back up quarterback who we signed last year, McCarron. We feel like we are pretty good at the quarterback position.”
