With the Rams at the back end of rounds this year, they’re going to have to let the draft develop in front of them.
We got a new Monday mock from Mocking the Draft’s Dan Kadar today that looked into some potential trades ahead of the Los Angeles Rams picking at #31.
It’s a worthwhile exercise because the Rams are going to have to sit and wait it out even if General Manager Les Snead engineers a trade. If they move up, it won’t be far, so the draft is going to take plenty of twists and turns before we’re anywhere near on the clock.
Kadar gets things going at #3 where he has the Jacksonville Jaguars working a deal with the New York Jets so the Jags can get their QB in Ohio State Buckeyes QB Dwayne Haskins. The trade market for the early picks will be interesting with the Arizona Cardinals at #1, the San Francisco 49ers at #2 and the Jets at #3 all with QB1s currently on their roster in Cardinals QB Josh Rosen, 49ers QB Wispy Draftalot and Jets QB Sam Darnold. So how teams like the Jags, the New York Giants at #6 and the Denver Broncos at #10 play their hands toward getting a new QB will be one of the most interesting points of the draft and probably the most interesting among the early action. Speaking of, Kadar has the Broncos working their way up to #5 in a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to take Missouri Tigers QB Drew Lock. Desperate times, desperate measures.
One name that will obviously be important to track is Oklahoma Sooners QB Kyler Murray. Murray announced today that he will forego a baseball career to focus on his NFL career instead. Kadar sends him to the Miami Dolphins at #13. Good luck dealing with those wheels, AFC East linebackers.
Kadar has a late trade with the Indianapolis Colts trading with the Seattle Seahawks. For reference for people thinking through how much capital the Rams would have to give to move up, the Colts move from #26 to #21 but have to toss in #89 from the third round just to move up five spots.

#31.) Alabama Crimson Tide S Deionte Thompson
What the Rams do in the first round is completely dependent on which players they can retain in free agency. The big free agents for Los Angeles are real big ones. They include defensive end Dante Fowler, Jr., safety Lamarcus Joyner, left guard Rodger Saffold III, and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. If the Rams lose a couple of them, which is possible, the team should try and move back. But if they’re stuck at No. 31 and Joyner leaves, Thompson would be a nice addition. He’s a very good coverage safety and comes to the NFL pro-ready in his technique thanks to playing at Alabama.
It’s certainly a sensible mock pick.
The real key here is just the serpentine path of the draft to the Rams at 31.
Might the Rams move up? Kadar has LSU Tigers ILB Devin White falling to #18. That’s tantalizing enough to me to consider what it would take to move into the 20s should a prospect Rams brass loves fall that deep.
Move back? Stockpiling picks would make a ton of sense for a roster that has a couple holes where draft picks from 2016, 2017 and 2018 would otherwise reside.
In the end, we’ve seen plenty of activity in the draft. We’re likely to see it again. With the Rams all the way at #31, we’re going to have to play observer well before we play participant and what we observe might be just as important as the decisions the Rams make on draft day.
