NFL compensatory picks should be out soon, Cowboys could get potentially get two

Hopefully the Cowboys will pick up an extra draft pick.

The Super Bowl is a few weeks in the rearview mirror which means that the NFL Combine is the next big thing on the calendar as far as the Dallas Cowboys are concerned.

Considering the time of year, compensatory picks should be announced fairly soon for NFL teams (they dropped on February 23rd last year). Dallas only has five picks in this draft thanks to two prior trades so the more that they could pick up, the better situation they’ll be in.

2019 Dallas Cowboys draft picks:

  • Round 2, 58th overall
  • Round 3, 91st overall
  • Round 4, 122nd overall
  • Round 5, 155th overall
  • Round 7, 219th overall

Dallas traded away their first- and sixth-round picks previously when they acquired Amari Cooper and Bene Benwikere, respectively. The formula that goes into compensatory picks is guarded by the NFL, but smart minds have projected the Cowboys to earn, at the very least, a fourth-round pick with the possibility for more.

The fourth-rounder that could be in Dallas soon comes by way of Anthony Hitchens signing with the Kansas City Chiefs a year ago, but there’s room for more thanks to Deonte Thompson.

If Deonte Thompson qualifies and Bene Benwikere does not qualify, Dallas will not get a 4th for Anthony Hitchens.

If Deonte Thompson does not qualify and Bene Benwikere does qualify, Dallas will be eligible for a 7th for Benwikere, but it would be unlikely to make the 32-pick limit.

If Deonte Thompson and Bene Benwikere qualify, nothing changes for Dallas.

We’ll see how active the Cowboys choose to be in free agency but they’re going to need every pick they can get, especially considering their first selection won’t happen until 57 players have been chosen. This draft is a big one for the Cowboys and in a contract-year for Jason Garrett.

Be on the lookout for comp pick news this coming week.
