Offensive coaching staff shuffle

Rams Head Coach Sean McVay has reassigned some responsibilities on offense with the addition of Grandpa Wade’s son and the exit of Zac Taylor.

When Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay’s coaching tree expanded with the Cincinnati Bengals having hired Zac Taylor to be their new head coach, the Rams were forced to adjust their offensive coaching staff.

As Taylor was the quarterbacks coach, McVay needed to tab someone to take that role. Somewhat surprisingly, he already had the candidate in house: Tight Ends Coach/Passing Game Coordinator/Co-Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron.

So with Waldron moving over to become QB Jared Goff ’s fourth QB coach in four years, the tight end coach position was vacated which prompted the hiring of Wes Phillips, the son of Rams Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips, as the tight ends coach.

As to Fisch’s role, we’ll have to see if the actual responsibilities he is inheriting get spelled out. Fisch was hired last January for a role that seemingly was largely about in-game clock management. Perhaps this promotion will allow him greater input on the offensive staff.

We’ll have to see if this is the last move for the coaching staff for the 2019 season or if there’s more shuffling left to do.
