The Panthers’ nickel cornerback was told he will be released this afternoon.
According to a league source, the Panthers have informed cornerback Captain Munnerlyn of his release. Munnerlyn will not be designated as a ‘post-June 1 cut’ and the Panthers will save $2 million against the 2019 salary cap with this move.

Munnerlyn will not be a post-June 1 cut, meaning Panthers will save $2M vs. the cap.
Yes, Panthers have released Captain Munnerlyn. It won’t be designated as a post-June 1 cut, FYI. Teams can’t make that designation until start of new league year in mid-March.

Munnerlyn had become a very familiar face in Carolina over the years. He was drafted in 2009 as a seventh-round pick and grew to become a solid corner for the Panthers over the years. He played for the Vikings in a three-year stint before coming back to Carolina as a free agent in 2014.
The nickel cornerback had 47 combined tackles, nine pass deflections, and one interception in 2018. He played in all sixteen games, but he only started in five of those games. The Panthers decided to cut Munnerlyn earlier than the June 1st deadline in order to save $2 million in cap space.
This is definitely intriguing to see, especially after the Panthers recently announced the release of safety Mike Adams. It seems as though this team is trying to revitalize its secondary by cutting veterans who have become less productive on the field over the years. The Panthers are making more moves as the NFL Draft gets closer by the day. What do you think, Panthers fans?
