Panthers take Clelin Ferrell in Kadar’s latest mock

The Panthers have the No. 16 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Carolina Panthers’ lack of a consistent pass rush was a huge factor in the disappointing 2018 season. As of right now, only three defensive ends from last year will be returning. If it weren’t already obvious, the Panthers must address their issues at defensive end soon. Considering there’s a plethora of talented defensive ends up for grabs in the upcoming NFL Draft, what better time for Marty Hurney to add to the roster?

Not much has changed for the Panthers in Dan Kadar’s latest mock draft for SB Nation. Kadar predicts Carolina will fill their defensive end needs with the No. 16 overall pick.

Last week, he mocked Montez Sweat to the Panthers at No. 16. This week, it’s the same position, but instead he has Clelin Ferrell.

16. Carolina Panthers: Clelin Ferrell, DE, Clemson

Offseason needs: Edge defender, offensive tackle, safety, guard

Even before Julius Peppers announced the end to his legendary career, the Panthers needed to find a pass rusher this offseason. That’s now doubly true. Mario Addison is Carolina’s only viable defensive end currently. Ferrell could end up being a top-10 pick, so to get him at No. 16 would be a steal. He’s not a star athlete for an end, but he wins with technique and power.

My take

At 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, Ferrell is nothing short of a physical beast. His hand technique is superb with knowing where to place his hands on the blocker to make them vulnerable and being able to beat the block. Ron Rivera has stated the Panthers will run both a 4-3 and 3-4 defensive scheme. Ferrell’s ability to play with two hands, one hand, or no hands in the ground makes him ideal for either defense. His only flaw is his flexibility and burst at the pass rush. However, he has the power and ability to squeeze gaps against the run.

I agree with Kadar that if Ferrell is still around, this would be a steal for the Panthers. What do you think?
