Patriots defensive line coach Brendan Daly headed to Chiefs, according to a new report

Daley was with Steve Spagnuolo on the Los Angeles Rams staff

According to a report from Boston Globe reporter Jim McBride, New England Patriots defensive line coach Brendan Daly is headed to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Daly, 43, has been the Patriots defensive line coach since 2015 and served as a defensive assistant the season before that. He was the defensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2012-13, and he served in that same capacity for the Los Angeles Rams from 2009-11 under head coach — ready for this? — Steve Spagnuolo.

Spagnuolo was named defensive coordinator of the Chiefs on January 24.

This reported move would also be likely to provide some domestic tranquility in the Daly household. According to the Boston Globe’s story, Daly’s wife Keely is originally from the Kansas City area.

The report now in hand does says that Daly is expected to “assume a similar position” in Kansas City. That report and his career path mean defensive line coach is a good bet.

If that’s the case, the status of yet another Chiefs assistant coach — current defensive line coach Britt Reid, who is the son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid — is unknown.

It’s possible that the Chiefs intend to use the younger Reid in a different capacity or that he wants to move on to a different franchise in order to get out from behind his father’s shadow (We’ve seen a similar path taken by Dave Toub’s son, Shane, in Chicago).

But it’s likely that we won’t know for sure about Reid — or secondary coaches Al Harris or Emmitt Thomas, both of whose job status is unknown with the reported hire of Dave Merritt — until the Chiefs release the full roster of assistant coaches for 2019, which Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said on Thursday should be pretty soon.
