New England loses another coach.
The reigning world champions keep losing assistant coaches: as was reported earlier today by the Boston Globe’s Jim McBride, New England Patriots defensive line coach Brendan Daly will leave the club to join the Kansas City Chiefs. According to the report, Daly will assume a similar role with the club that finished second in the AFC after being defeated at home by the Patriots in the conference title game.
Daly originally joined New England as a defensive assistant in 2014 before being promoted to coach the line one year later. He held the role ever since and was instrumental in turning the Patriots into one of the NFL’s best pass rushing teams over the course of the 2018 season: Daly helped develop the likes of Trey Flowers, Malcom Brown, Deatrich Wise Jr. and Adam Butler into a solid group of linemen alongside more seasoned players like Lawrence Guy.
With him now joining the Chiefs, the Patriots will need to replace another coach: the 43-year old is the third defensive coach and fifth overall to leave the club over the last week. Linebackers coach and de facto defensive coordinator Brian Flores has accepted the head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins, while cornerbacks coach Josh Boyer as well as wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea and assistant quarterbacks coach Jerry Schupliski will join him.
As a result, Steve Belichick is the only defensive assistant coach returning in 2019. While a defensive coordinator is reportedly already found in Greg Schiano, the other positions will still need to be filled — either by defensive assistants Mike Pellegrino or Brian Belichick, or by external hires tied to Schiano. Needless to say, however, that Daly leaving is another obstacle the team will need to overcome as it tries to defend its title.
