New England has plenty of vacancies to fill.
Lombardi is a familiar name in the Northeast. Not only did the New England Patriots just win their sixth trophy named after legendary former Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, they also once employed a man who shares the same last name: Mike Lombardi, a long-time acquaintance of head coach Bill Belichick, worked with the club as an assistant to the coaching staff during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Now, it looks as if Lombardi will make a return on the Patriots’ staff — in name, at least: according to ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots are expected to add his son Mick Lombardi to their coaching staff in some capacity. The younger Lombardi is no stranger when it comes to working with the team: he got his first NFL job with the Patriots and served as a scouting and later coaching assistant in 2011 and 2012.
The following year, Lombardi left New England to join the San Francisco 49ers. He spent the next four years with the club in numerous roles before moving back to the East Coast in 2017 when he was hired by the New York Jets as an offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach. Now, it seems as if he will return to the organization that gave him his start in the league in a yet to be reported role.
Given Lombardi’s history, however, one can assume that he will fill one of the Patriots’ two coaching vacancies on offense: both wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea and assistant quarterbacks coach Jerry Schupliski left the club last week to join Brian Flores’ staff with the Miami Dolphins. And while 2018 coaching assistant Atif Austin appears to be a prime candidate to fill one of the open spots (possible O’Shea’s), Lombardi might be given the other.
