Rams-Patriots: bold predictions

The biggest game of the year won’t be decided by the QBs or even the RBs, but rather in the trenches.

I have spent the past couple days in a haze of NFL podcasts, listening to every former NFL player that’s still alive and willing to share their knowledge of the game. So, Super Bowl LIII, featuring the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots, has a lot of intrigue, narratives and stars. If you had to guess who would decide this game in the fourth quarter, you’d probably predict QB Jared Goff or RB Todd Gurley, right?

Let’s get bold.

The Super Bowl MVP will be DT Ndamukong Suh

Catching fire in the post season, DT Ndamukong Suh didn’t have a stellar regular season, but none of that matters now. It appears that Suh and DT Aaron Donald have developed a chemistry together — mainly Suh’s ability to exploit the double coverage given to Donald. Most likely facing one-on-one pass-rush situations, I’m predicting that Ndamukong Suh is going to ruin QB Tom Brady’s Super Bowl Sunday, sacking him 4 times, two of those ending up in a turnover. However, a defensive tackle doesn’t get the MVP just for sacks — he needs to end up in the end zone. So, yeah, Suh will end up picking up a fumble before stumbling in for a score.

NRC will seal the game for the Rams

CB Nickell Robey-Coleman made a name for himself in New Orleans, but he’ll make an even bigger splash in Atlanta. In what I see as a key to the game, Robey-Coleman is going to do an excellent job preventing slot receiver and Pats security blanket Julian Edelman from going off. In fact, NRC is going to grab a climatic interception in the final minutes of the game to secure the win for the LA Rams.

Coach McVay is going to be disciplined with the run game

The assumption with young coaches and teams that haven’t played in big games like this is that they'll be eager to call their flashy plays to goose the momentum of the game. Fans and probably the Pats will expect McVay to get impatient, going to pass plays earlier than necessary — so look for the opposite of that. Coach Belichick will obviously call the game however he wants because he ran out of F#*ks years ago. McVay is going to use RB Todd Gurley early and often, tiring out guys like LB Kyle Van Noy as he gets to the edge. And the jet-sweeps will be a large part of the success of the Rams’ offense as well.

Goff will be measured, sharp, and victorious

QB Jared Goff isn’t going to throw up huge fantasy points and he won’t cause any harmful turnovers. Instead, our franchise quarterback is going to manage the game, allowing the game to come to him. So, what’s bold about this prediction, you ask? No turnovers and 2 TD passes. So, nothing huge that’ll cement his status as a superstar, but Goff will turn in enough of a strong performance that the Rams get the W.

The Patriots are an old sneaky team that is never out of the game, no matter the score. So, look for a dogfight on Sunday with the Rams nailing down the win with their stellar defense. Rams win, 33-27.
