Redskins aren’t ruling out return for former Chiefs QB Alex Smith this season

Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams spoke to Sirius XM NFL Radio.

Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith may not be ready for the start of the 2019 season, but he could return before the end of it, according to Washington Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams, who recently spoke to SiriusXM NFL Radio. The Chiefs traded Smith to the Redskins last offseason.

“We all know that Alex [has] got to overcome some issues,” Williams said. “The thing about him is you can’t count him out. Just being around him and then when he goes over the workout thing that he’s done before he got there, I can’t say he’s going to be back tomorrow—that wouldn’t be fair to him, but I’m not going to say that by the end of the season, he might not be back, either. That wouldn’t be fair to him, either. But it’s our job in the personnel department to find somebody who can play. Now thank God we have Colt (McCoy) coming back from an injury. We just got to find somebody to mix in there. And we know we’ve got to have that guy, but we got to build around whoever it is. That’s the most important thing.”

Smith, 34, suffered a compound fracture back in mid-November and was last spotted in late January at a Washington Wizards game.

The former 2005 first-overall pick played for the Chiefs from 2013-17, leading them to the playoffs four of his five seasons as starter. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid often credits Smith for his mentorship of Patrick Mahomes, who won the league’s Most Valuable Player Award in his first season at the helm.

Fortunately, Smith’s deal with the Redskins provides him financial security for the rest of his life, but knowing what I know about the player, I doubt we’ve seen the last of him.
