Report: Sean Lee “expects to play” in 2019... will it be for Cowboys or someone else?

Where will The General be next season?

One of the biggest questions surrounding the 2019 Dallas Cowboys is whether or not Sean Lee will be part of them.

The General was the identity of the Cowboys defense for so long but all of that changed last season when Leighton Vander Esch and the Hot Boyz entered our lives. For a team that couldn’t get by without Lee in 2017, they managed to make a lot of fans forget about him in his absence.

That’s been the issue with Sean Lee for so long, really. He’s a fantastic player but there is usually an absence that comes with him playing for you because he’s unfortunately been injury prone throughout his career. It’s for this reason that many thought he might give retirement a serious thought this offseason and even if he did... it doesn’t seem like that will be a reality any time soon. The Athletic has reported that he expects to play next season.

Lee is under contract for one more season with the Cowboys and has a cap number just south of $11M in 2019. That’s an awful lot for someone who would be more of a role player as the aforementioned LVE (with the help of Jaylon Smith) has taken over as the team’s star linebacker. The Cowboys and Lee could always re-negotiate some things, but who ever wants to give up money?

We’ll have to wait to see just what the Cowboys want to do with Sean Lee, but we know that they are not above hard decisions when it comes to players who have been of extreme value to the franchise. Two years ago they released Tony Romo, last season they moved on from Dez Bryant, who’s to say it would be any different with Lee?
