- Top needs and players to watch at Scouting Combine (ohio.com) - For the first time in years, the franchise will head to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis without dying of thirst for a franchise quarterback. The focus will shift accordingly to other positions as General Manager John Dorsey attempts to vault the Browns into the playoffs coming off their turnaround from 0-16 to 7-8-1 during Mayfield’s rookie season.
- Jaelen Strong thankful to resume career with Browns (clevelandbrowns.com) - Jaelen Strong spent the 2018 season out of football. Now, he’s just thankful to be back, even if it is the offseason. Strong, a former third-round pick of the Houston Texans, signed with the Browns on Wednesday.
- Greg Joseph recalls being cut by FAU (Palm Beach Post) - He might be having fun with the resurgent Cleveland Browns, but there was one reason former Florida Atlantic kicker Greg Joseph was happy to be back in his element on Wednesday night. Joseph, who found success with the Browns after being signed last September, returned to FAU this week and spoke to an Introduction to Sports Administration class. Joseph and Brian Battle, a senior athletic department member who also teaches the class, talked for an hour about Joseph’s path from American Heritage to making game-winning kicks in the NFL.
- Free agent film room: wide receivers (cleveland.com) - It’s tough to get a great feel for how badly the Browns think they need to add at wide receiver. Free agency will clear some of this up, but if they avoid one in free agency, expect them to use a pick in one of the first three rounds of the draft. - Jordy Nelson critical of Aaron Rodgers’ critics (madison.com) - Jordy Nelson isn’t exactly sure why a couple of his former Green Bay Packers teammates seem to make news on a semi-regular basis by publicly criticizing Aaron Rodgers.
- Getting the NFL’s five biggest spenders out of salary cap hell (ESPN) - The New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles have the least amount of cap space to work with as free agency and the draft approach. The Jaguars and Eagles are both over the cap. Here’s how each of these teams can save some money and still make a moderate splash in free agency.
- Bears expected to release Cody Parkey (NFL.com) - A season-concluding blocked field goal in the playoffs -- and a questionable appearance on The Today Show -- will likely be the lasting images of kicker Cody Parkey’s tenure with the Chicago Bears. When the new league year begins on March 13, the Bears have decided to release Parkey, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday afternoon, per a source informed of the situation.
