If you’re doing a mock draft and you allow for trades, you’re just not doing it right if you don’t have the Seattle Seahawks trading down at least once. Hey, maybe this is the year it doesn’t happen, maybe John Schneider and Pete Carroll trade up! Anything is possible, but just because anything is possible doesn’t mean you shouldn’t account for the most likely outcome. The most likely outcome is that the Seahawks will trade down.
But maybe your mock draft doesn’t account for trades.
That’s the case in ESPN’s Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft, which has Seattle taking Florida outside linebacker Jachai Polite with the 21st overall pick.
Even if the Seahawks re-sign (or franchise tag) free-agent defensive end Frank Clark, we know Pete Carroll & Co. are always looking for edge rushers. That’s Polite, who had 11 sacks last season. At 6-foot-2, 242 pounds, Polite will have to put on some weight to play end in a 4-3 defense, but that shouldn’t an issue. In fact, the comp I’ve made for him is a guy drafted by Carroll and GM John Schneider: former West Virginia pass-rusher Bruce Irvin, who came in at 6-foot-3, 245 pounds at the combine in 2012.
Kiper’s mock has defensive linemen going with each of the top five picks in what is expected to be the most loaded pass-rushing class in quite some time. That could allow the Seahawks to find a really good one at 21, or even later when they inevitably move down and add to their current draft stock of only four picks.
Over at CBS Sports, Ryan Williams did allow for one trade, but didn’t make any moves at 21. Instead he had Seattle picking cornerback Greedy Williams. Carroll has never drafted a cornerback anywhere near the top two rounds, though it would appear to be a need as of today.
