Should the Buccaneers pursue Cody Parkey?

It was just a bad year for the 27-year-old

The decade long search for a kicker in Tampa Bay is expected to continue this off-season. Many people around the league anticipate a possible reunion between Matt Bryant and the Buccaneers come free agency, but there will of course be other options.

One option that comes to mind is Cody Parkey, who is set to be released by the Chicago Bears after a disappointing 2018 season.

The only thing many fans know Parkey for is his blunder in the playoffs against the Philadelphia Eagles. If he didn’t clank the kick off both posts, we would have seen the Chicago Bears advance to the divisional round of the playoffs. Let’s not forget though, if it wasn’t for Parkey, the Bears likely would have never even been in that game. Parkey did connect on all three of his field goal attempts prior to missing the game winner.

With that being said, there is no doubt that after signing a four year, $15 million dollar contract prior to 2018 with the Bears that Parkey was a huge disappointment last year. He only made 76.7% of his kicks after making 91.3% in 2017 with the Dolphins.

Over his career, Parkey is an 83.9% kicker and was selected to the pro bowl in 2014, his first year in the league.

While I don’t think Parkey is the best option out there, I do think he is a solid kicker who just had a bad year in 2018 and I would not be totally opposed to the Buccaneers looking his direction in 2019.
