Should the Titans pick up Jack Conklin’s 5th year option?

Yesterday Terry and I had a conversation around Bill Barnwell’s article on how to improve the Titans this offseason. You can listen to our conversation here and read the article here. The second item on Barnwell’s list is picking up Jack Conklin’s 5th year option. Here are part of his comments:

It’s natural to be concerned about Conklin’s knee, but the Titans have to pick up his fifth-year option and hope the 24-year-old will look like his usual self in 2019, another year removed from the injury. Most offensive linemen are able to recover from ACL injuries without missing much, so unless there are complications we don’t know about, the Titans should still consider Conklin to be an essential part of their future.

While I think that picking up the 5th option is probably the right thing to do, I don’t think it is the slam dunk that Barnwell says it is. The option will probably cost the Titans somewhere around $13 million for 2020. What happens if he doesn’t return to form? What happens if they decide he can’t play right tackle in this screen and they move him to guard? What happens if that doesn’t work out?

Even with all of that being said, the reason I think they should pick up the option is because they can still get out of the 5th year if they cut him before the first day of the 2020 league year. That would give them some time to re-evaluate after the season ends.

What do you think? Should the Titans pick up Conklin’s 5th-year option?
